Admissions Process

Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering is the only organization in Utah dedicated to providing temporary pet care for dogs and cats when families are facing an unexpected crisis or emergency. Our services are designed for situations such as hospitalization, domestic violence, treatment, homelessness, or other unplanned hardships. We are unable to provide pet care for situations related to personal choice, including relocating for work, building a home, travel, or similar circumstances

Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering provides a safe haven for people who need temporary care for their pet(s) during a crisis. Our goal is to reunite pets with their families so animals are not surrendered to local shelters or rescues. Our program offers up to 60 days of care.

Each person in need of temporary foster care is required to fill out an application, which can be found down below.

Ruff Haven staff carefully review each application to ensure it meets program requirements. Once an application has been reviewed, a staff member will contact the applicant to discuss next steps.

Ruff Haven provides pets with short-term care either at our sheltering facility or in a foster home. During their stay, pets receive food, exercise, socialization, routine veterinary care, and wellness exams. When needed, we also provide spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and microchips at no cost to the owner.

For additional information please check out our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Eligibility and Requirements

We provide basic crisis care to keep your pets safe and healthy while you work toward reunification. Our program is free of charge. While we do our best to accommodate visits and requests, decisions are based on overall program needs and availability. This may include separating pets, placing them in foster homes, or housing them with other animals. If these options are not the right fit, we can help direct you to other resources such as private boarding or community support groups.

Please read the following guidelines before filling out the temporary care application:

  • We provide sheltering for pet owners who can reunite with their pets. We do not provide fostering if a pet is going to be rehomed or is waiting to go into a rescue/shelter.

  • The owner of the animal (or their Power of Attorney) must be able to consent to our services. We are unable to provide services to individuals who are unconscious or cannot communicate with us.

  • All animals must be spayed/neutered or be spayed/neutered while in our care (provided by Ruff Haven at no cost to the owner.) Learn why we require spaying and neutering HERE.

  • All animals must be current on vaccinations (rabies, distemper/parvo, bordetella, FVRCP) or be given vaccinations while in our care (provided by Ruff Haven at no cost to owner)

  • All pet owners must be able to retrieve their pet within 60 days (30-day extensions given on a case-by-case basis)

  • Pet owners must have exhausted other potential sheltering resources (family, friends, coworkers, etc.) before applying

  • Pet owners receiving medical or substance abuse treatment must be willing to sign a Release of Information (ROI) with the treatment provider

  • Pet owners must be available for weekly text or email check-ins (exceptions may include incarceration or treatment requirements)

If you meet these eligibility guidelines and requirements, please fill out the application below. A Ruff Haven staff member will contact you within 24 hours. Program space is limited and clients are not always served on a first-come, first-serve basis.

**All intakes and contacts are by appointment only. Please do not show up to Ruff Haven without an appointment as the staff will not be able to serve you.

**Due to increased demand and limited capacity, we currently have a 1–2 week waiting list for eviction and housing-related situations. If you would like to be added to the waiting list, please complete the application below and a staff member will contact you.**
