Animal Care Technician

Job Title: Kennel and Facility Support Technician
Organization: Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering
Location: Salt Lake City 
Employment Type: 32 hours per week  Salary: $15/hr
Reports To: Shelby Gordon (Kennel Manager)


Job Summary:
Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering is seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual to join our team as an Animal Care Technician. This multifaceted role is essential to maintaining the daily operations of our shelter, ensuring the health and safety of the animals in our care, and keeping the facility organized and in excellent condition.
This position requires a passion for animals, attention to detail, and the ability to perform physical tasks in a dynamic environment.


Key Responsibilities:


Animal Care 

  • Clean and sanitize kennels, cages, and common areas to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.

  • Feed, water, and administer basic care to animals according to specific schedules and dietary needs.

  • Monitor animal behavior and health, reporting any concerns to the management or veterinary staff.

  • Assist with bathing, grooming, and basic handling of animals.

  • Ensure animals receive adequate exercise and enrichment activities.                                         

 

Qualifications:

 

​Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience working with animals or in a related field.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Comfortable working in an environment with animals of all sizes and temperaments.

  • Strong attention to detail and time-management skills.

  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in a kennel, veterinary clinic, or animal shelter.

 

Work Environment:
This position requires physical activity, including bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods. You may be exposed to loud noises, odors, and varying weather conditions when performing outdoor tasks.

Employment Type: Part-Time, 15-20 hours a week (900 hours in 12-month period)
Salary: Living Stipend: $15,300/$17 per hour (Biweekly: $586.45), Education Award: $3,697.50

Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing temporary shelter and support for pets during times of crisis.  Our mission is to prevent the surrender or abandonment of beloved pets by offering compassionate and practical solutions. We provide emergency pet sheltering, pet owner support, community resource referrals, and education and advocacy. We are Utah's only organization to provide crisis sheltering for families experiencing homelessness.

The Salt Lake County Vulnerable Populations AmeriCorps Program is a State and National grant focused on Economic Opportunity.  We're dedicated to bridging gaps and reducing barriers for vulnerable populations, including (but not limited to):

  • Youth

  • Individuals experiencing homelessness

  • Those involved in the criminal justice system

 

AmeriCorps members serve individuals and families within community agencies, assisting with critical needs such as:

Job Summary:

​

We’re seeking an engaged and passionate AmeriCorps member to support our outreach efforts, community programming, and volunteers who assist with these activities. This person will be a key connector between Ruff Haven and the community, helping raise awareness of our services, supporting outreach volunteers, and assisting clients in need.

 

This AmeriCorps member position is for a reduced half-time position (900 hours over 12 months, 15-20 hours/week).  This is a flexible schedule, primarily Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with some possible evening and weekend hours depending on scheduled events.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct community outreach: tabling events, neighborhood canvassing, and representing Ruff Haven at community events and partner fairs

  • Manage volunteer coordination by recruiting, onboarding, and overseeing volunteers who support community outreach and tabling events.

  • Help develop and implement outreach programming such as events, clinics, neighborhood engagement, and community education efforts.

  • Help with data tracking & reporting: maintain volunteer logs, client interactions, and outreach outcomes.

  • Support client resource referrals: help with pet pantry distribution when needed, intake screenings, and connecting clients to wrap-around services

 

Qualifications:

​

  • High School diploma or equivalent 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.

  • Organized and detail-oriented

  • Typing skills

  • Experience working and/or education in the Social Service field a plus

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required.

  • Flexibility to work evenings and Saturdays
